Hair Loss Solutions – FAQs

My hair loss caused me to be depressed. Is depression curable?

Depression is curable providing you are ready to be cured. Depression is something that involves your mind and body and affects every aspect of your life. It hampers the way you eat, sleep, your thoughts and your level of confidence. A depression is not just a mood swing or a weakness within you but is a disorder that requires treatment. The symptoms may be different for different people, depending on the severity of the depression, but it causes problems in the emotional behavior and general well-being of the person.

Are stinging nettles the same ones that you see in woods and fields?

Yes they are. Nothing mysterious about this, if you take a walk out into the fields you will see these ordinary stinging nettles growing everywhere. Pick them wearing a glove though because they do have a nasty sting to them.

There so many types of Green Tea. Are they all as good as each other?

Well this can depend very much on how the tea is grown and processed and of course on how each manufacturer decides to blend the tea. However it is thought that the Japanese blends are the most purest and healthiest. Look for blends like Sencha, Gyokuro or Kabusecha for the most popular ones used in Japan.

I started off using an onion on my scalp but cannot stand the smell. Is it alright to switch?

Yes of course it is alright to stop using any of the program mixtures if they are not suiting you, and it is fine to keep trying different recommended blends until you find the one that suits you best. In this case though, when you switch over to your next one you should really start from the beginning of that particular treatment module, from when you started using the onion. It is not good to constantly switch blends and mixtures though, so once you have found the one you like best you should try to stay with it.

Will an ordinary body massage help the blood circulation to my scalp?

There are many benefits from having a massage and improved circulation is one of them. Having said that, a body massage will not increase circulation to your scalp as much as having a head massage would, that’s why we recommend you to have both types of massage as a regular part of your health regime.

I have been reading about Ho Shou Wu in your eBook. It sounds great for grey hair. Has it got any bad side effects?

No, none whatsoever. It is non toxic with no side effects. Originally this herb was called jiaoteng, but according to Chinese proverbs, the name was changed after the man who first tried it, Mr Ho. And Shou in Chinese means head and Wu means black, that’s how we now have the name of Ho Shou Wu.

Is Lymphatic Massage effective in clearing the colon?

Not directly it isn’t, but it certainly helps your system to rid itself of a build up of harmful toxins. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to heal, and prevent disease, and this type of massage, sometimes known as lymph drainage massage, is a technique used to help increase lymph flow. The increased lymph flow removes all the harmful substances and toxins from the tissues and increases your immune function.

If my scalp is now clean, and I follow the detox diet. How long before I see new hair growth?

Generally speaking most people start to feel the benefits of the program round about the 3 month stage, providing they have followed all the guidelines and different stages as advised. Round about this time, your hair and scalp tend to look cleaner, stronger and healthier and your general feeling of well-being improves too. Most people say this period seems to be the turning point when they can actually feel a difference starting to take place. No two cases are the same, but from here onwards, small tell tale signs are there to be seen, and after something like 6 months, possibly longer, new hair growth, even though it may be still very slight at this stage, can be visible.

I bought a boar hair bristle brush but it seems too hard on my hair. Can I use a comb instead?

Yes, of course you can. You have to adapt this program to suit yourself in every way possible. What suits some people may not suit others. So, if you can’t get along with using a hairbrush then use a comb and use your fingers too. Have you thought that you may be brushing your hair too hard, or even trying to brush your hair whilst it’s still wet? Try using softer, more gentle brush strokes before giving up completely.

There seems to be differently manufactured Safflower oil. Which one do I use?

There are two methods by which the oil is extracted from the plant seeds — the mechanical process and the chemical process. In the mechanical method, the oil is extracted from the seeds naturally, which helps in retaining the essential nutrients found in the oil. But during the chemical process, certain chemicals are added to refine the oil, which removes most of the nutrients found in the oil and contaminates it with some harmful chemicals that may cause a negative effect on the body. So ask the health store assistant for the correct type for hair care. Because safflower oil is so rich, it can protect, nourish and firm up the hair — it’s a really good hydrating natural hair care option. I’d say to try to find odourless safflower oil, because it’s lighter in texture and can more effectively penetrate the scalp.

I want to use Aloe Vera leaves from a plant instead of a gel. Will this be as effective?

Most certainly. In fact, it might be even better than a manufactured Aloe Vera product. The problem with some manufactured Aloe Vera gels is what types of additives are being used, and you want to avoid additives as much as possible.

When I first started losing hair I used Propecia to help but it caused acne problems. How long will this acne last for?

Unfortunately this is one of the side effects that propecia is known for, as well as sexual performance problems and impotency too. As usual, if you are concerned about this, I would urge you to see your own doctor and get a proper check up.

After 2 months my hair is still thin. Is this normal?

Yes it is perfectly normal. You have to consider how many years of damage, neglect and mistreatment of your hair that you need to put right first, before you can possibly start to expect to see new hair growth.

My diet is improved, I am exercising regularly and I have followed all the course instructions so far. But after 8 weeks there is still no sign of new hair growth. What is wrong?

Don’t worry. If you have followed the program instructions so far then there is nothing to worry about. As we said in the eBook, there is no magic cure that will work overnight to give you a full head of hair again. As long you prepared and cleansed your scalp and system efficiently, and are now using the external and internal natural remedies we recommended, then everything will be moving in the right direction. Most people will not start to see any new growth at all for at least 6 months or so, but this varies between one person and another.

I am thinking of becoming a vegan. Will this make my hair worse?

Yes there is a strong probability that if you do stick to a strict vegan diet you may face the consequences of extra hair loss, even more so than you may be experiencing right now. The reason is because of the iron deficiency in vegan diets can cause the hair to go into the telogen effluviam stage where the hair rests, and the danger is that the hair will not be able to resume it’s normal cycle of rest and grow.

I am a heavy smoker and can’t quit. I know this is not good for my general health but why is it so bad for my hair?

If you smoke, one of the effects is that it restricts your blood flow, and if you do that your hair and scalp do not get enough supply of oxygen and nutrients that they need. Without a strong blood flow your hair follicles tend to clog up, your hair weakens and gradually falls out. Furthermore, because your follicles are now clogged and the circulation is weak, it is almost impossible to grow replacement hair.

I realise now that I never really did my first months treatment good enough. Is it too late to go right back to the beginning of this course and start again?

No it’s not too late, and in fact it’s the best thing you should do. But don’t try to mix up the treatment stages, if you start right back at the beginning then it is important to start again right from the start.

I love the hair conditioner and shampoo mixture. I want to tell my friend who also suffers with thin hair about it. Will this help cure her hair problem?

Not completely, but it will help. Just to wash your hair with our recommended natural formula is only part of the hair rejuvenation process, there is so much more to do, and remember that she will need to blend her shampoo according to her hair type as well.

Is there any difference between Holistic Healing and Alternative Healing?

No, there is no difference at all. Both mean a way of healing by natural methods not by the conventional western ways.

I just read about using water that is too hot being harmful to hair, so how hot should the water be?

If you wash your hair in boiling hot water you will greatly damage your scalp and hair. I recommend that you use lukewarm water to wash with and cooler water than that to rinse off with, that way the cool water locks in the moisture in the hair shaft.

My elder brother went completely bald in his 30’s. What chance have I got of doing the same?

Well, if we believe that most cases of hair loss are hereditary then normally, you would have a very big chance of following on like your brother and possibly losing most of your hair as well. However, with the right type of treatment and being prepared to make necessary changes where needed, your chances of going bald are very doubtful. It all depends on your level of commitment and your willingness to want to prevent losing your hair. We can show you what to do, but it has to be you who actually takes action, we can’t do that for you.

Is colonic irrigation safe and how often should you have one?

Providing colonic irrigation is done for you by a qualified practitioner there are no health risks at all, it is very safe and is medically approved as well. What happens normally is that you have 2 treatments within a 2 week period to properly cleanse your colon. After that, your therapist can assess your requirements and advise you accordingly. Most regulars seem to opt for a twice or four times a year schedule but I think this is a matter of personal requirement and judgement.

How can lack of exercise cause hair loss?

Cardiovascular exercise, exercise that increases the heart rate, helps boost poor circulation. If there is poor circulation in our scalp, a lot of toxins will accumulate there and hinders healthy hair growth. Strive to get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least five times a week in order to strengthen your heart and increase blood circulation.

What is the relationship between a high fat diet and hair loss

The balding process can be slowed down by taking a low-fat diet. Some scientists suggest that the male pattern baldness is tied to increased testosterone levels during puberty. A high-fat, meat-based diet raises testosterone levels, and that may adversely affect hair follicles.

What is the role of caffeine in hair loss

OK, this is a disputed topic because of the many contrasting studies with regards to caffeine and hair growth. Most references to caffeine as a compound to reduce hair loss source back to a German study by Aplecin Cosmetic with Dr. Adolf Klaenk. Do not try drinking your way to reduced hair loss. The equivalent consumption would be around 60 to 80 cups per day for the necessary caffeine level to reach the roots. Professor Peter Elsner who is part of the team at the University of Jena noted that this stimulant is more effective on men whose roots were testosterone sensitive (male pattern baldness), one of the causes of hair loss.

Why does a high intake of sugar make me more predisposed to hair loss

For people with balding inflammatory skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis excessive sugars and starches can play a role. High intake of starches and sugars makes inflammation worse, so that inflammation on the scalp creates blockage of hair follicles and scabbing, preventing hair growth.

Why are nuts and legumes an important part of the hair care diet

Nuts and legumes are rich in protein. Because hair is a protein, it makes sense that consuming more protein will help your hair grow faster and thicker. However, consuming too much protein and not enough other important nutrients is not good for your body. It is important to maintain a balanced diet. A balanced healthy diet will help improve your overall health, and help you have healthier hair. If you don’t presently consume enough protein, you might want to try consuming more of the following protein-rich foods: Eggs, fish, wheat germ, yogurt, beans and calves liver. Also helpful is brewer’s yeast and soy protein.

Can lack of sleep cause me to lose hair?

Yes it can. Prolonged periods without sleep have quite a dramatic impact on the hair follicles, but it’s not entirely irreversible, if you change your lifestyle. And day sleep is different from night sleep.

I have been bald for 10 years. If I follow your eBook will it ever grow back

There is every chance that your hair will re grow, but if you return to the usual ways, it may also fall out again. No one can predict when it might re grow or fall out. The course of the disease varies from person to person. Some people lose just a few patches of hair, then the hair re grows, and the condition never recurs. Other people continue to lose and re grow hair for many years. A few lose all the hair on their head; some lose all the hair on their head, face, and body. Even in those who lose all their hair, the possibility for full re growth remains.

I have grown hair a little bit and now I love the feel of it. My problem is graying hair. Any ideas on how to color hair the natural way

For blondes, you can try a chamomile rinse. For brunettes, you can try sage, walnut herb or black tea rinses. For red hair, you can try henna powder.

I am female in my 50s and I own a restaurant business and recently noticed my hair thinning. I have been using a hair net to keep my hair from interfering with my work and for sanitation purposes. Is the hair thinning/ hair loss due to the way I wear my hair

Hair loss can be experienced with hair nets and ponytails. These hairstyles build up residue, oil and dirt in hair, blocking the hair follicles, which further impedes healthy hair growth. If you don’t want to lose hair, free your hair from these hairstyles.

Are anaemic people more prone to hair loss

Anaemia is one of the most frequent causes of hair loss. Eat plenty of iron-rich foods, like liver (Avoid if you are pregnant) and other organ meat, whole grain cereals, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, dates, and raisins.

How much alcohol should I drink every week for you to say that I am drinking alcohol in moderation?

Alcohol drinking per se is not bad, health wise. It only gets harmful when it gets out of hand, that is, when taken in excess or not in moderation. So moderate drinking means… For women: 1 bottle of beer/ 120 ml of wine (approximately 2-3 small shots)/ 30 ml of spirits (1 shot) per day For men: it should be no more than 2 bottles of beer/240 ml or 1 glass of wine or 60 ml of spirits (2 shots) per day.

Will the right diet, exercise and stopping smoking and alcohol also prevent split ends from forming in my hair?

Split ends is a problem commonly faced by people with dry or very brittle hair. Split ends occur, when the protective layer of cuticle is removed from the tip of the strands. Although diet, exercises, diet and healthy living can do something beneficial to split ends, you should avoid physical stress on your hair, such as trimming hair with split ends, regular washing of hair, no vigorous brushing or combing and no blow dries.

What is the relationship between hair loss and zinc levels?

Deficiency in zinc can contribute a lot to hair shedding because without zinc and other related minerals, you hair shafts get weakened, causing hair breakage and very slow hair re growth. Zinc benefits for hair include promotion of cell reproduction, tissue growth and repair of broken tissues. It also maintains the oil-secreting glands that are attached to your hair follicles, thus decreasing their chances of falling off.

Lemonade serves as a master cleanser which aids the body in complete detoxification and relieves the body of environmental stressors which can, over time, cause the body harm, malfunction and disease.

How does scalp exercise increase size, strength and elasticity of hair?

Scalp exercises are a series of movements that are meant to stop hair loss and to encourage the growth of new healthy hair. The exercises help quicken the blood flow to the skin of the scalp and strengthen the walls of the capillaries that nourish the hair follicles.

What are the benefits of the warm and cold water wash?

Hot water can damage your hair. If the water inside the hair strand gets too hot it will expand, and burst the cell walls. Cold water is better. It will close the cuticles on the hair shaft so they lie down nice and smooth. It will make your hair look much shinier and will help prevent tangles and split ends. So wash in warm (not hot) water, then do a final rinse with cold water.

Are scalp exercises also applicable for dandruff?

Many find it preferable to exercise the scalp prior to washing the hair so that any scalp debris (i.e. dandruff) that is lifted during the exercise can be washed out immediately. But do not attempt to massage your scalp if there is inflammation and soreness, as found in dandruff, as this may aggravate the problem.

What causes dandruff?

Dandruff is caused by micro-organism called pityrosporum-ovle which are present in every body’s scalp. Symptoms of dandruff get aggravated when exposed to dust, UV light, harsh chemical based shampoo, hair dyes etc., this results in increase in number of microbes which causes unhealthy residue over the scalp which leads to dandruff, which is the cause of unhealthy scalp results in unhealthy, lifeless hair and may result in excessive loss of hair too.

Drinking LOTS of alcohol in one period, increases estrogen levels. Drinking high amounts of alcohol causes a dramatic rise in estrogen levels in the body particularly the day after when hung over. Not only that but alcohol can deplete the mineral zinc from your body. Zinc is essential for maintaining healthy hair. My advice is if you like to drink then at least try and drink in moderate amounts, especially if you are serious about saving your hair.

My problem is that I am losing my eyelashes. What is the cause of this? Is your natural hair rejuvenation program applicable in my cas?

Loss of eyelashes can be caused by a variety of medical problems. If you’re noticing thinning of the hair on your head and the appearance of bald patches, you may be suffering from alopecia areata. Other medical conditions which may cause loss of eyelashes include hypothyroidism and various hormonal imbalances as well as autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Nutritional disturbances such as a severe protein deficiency or malnourishment can also cause loss of eyelashes. Certain medications, especially cancer chemotherapy, may also play a role. In addition, there’s a mite called D. folliculorum which can cause an infection that can contribute to eyelash loss. Also allergy to your eye makeup. Check with your physician and rule out these medical conditions as a cause for your loss of eyelashes first before proceeding to our program.

How can stress turn your hair grey?

Stress causes hair to start turning grey, because it damages the protective mechanism of the stem cells found in hair follicles; these stem cells that are responsible for hair colour simply stop from renewing themselves, and that’s why normal coloured hair gradually becomes grey in time. Stress also leads to an increase in cortisol levels which trigger the hormone changes that lead on to a form of hair loss as well.

Ever since my teens, over 7 years ago, I have always worn a pony tail hair style. My hair is really thinning, dry and very brittle. Is it too late to repair the damage?

No, it’s never too late, but it gets harder and longer to repair any damage the longer you leave it. We covered this problem of extreme hairstyles in our eBook. When people style their hair in cornrows or weaves, or even in ponytails and partings, they face the danger of self afflicted damage to their hair. You should alter your hairstyle and wear your hair loose and relaxed.

Can pulling a tight jumper over my head directly after a shower, whilst my hair is wet have a bad effect on my hair? I have noticed quite a lot of hair loss at these times

The biggest problem is by handling your hair too roughly whilst it is still wet. Many people with longer hair, men and women, still tend to dry their hair the way they did as children, or when their hair was short. They use a towel to rub away at their hair and scalp as if they were polishing their shoes. This is when they notice a huge amount of tangled hair left in the towel. The same principle applies to putting on clothes whilst your hair is still wet too.

Why is it so bad to brush your hair when it’s still wet?

Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea, at least not with a traditional bristle-brush. The more modern “tined” brushes used for blow-dry styling, are acceptable, provided they have widely-spaced tines. The problem is that wet hair is much more fragile and susceptible to damage when wet. Fine-toothed combs and bristle brushes put too much pressure on wet hair and cause hair to stretch out of shape or to break off when placed under too much stress. The best way to detangle and groom wet hair is with a wide-toothed comb. You can use the wide-tooth comb first and then work your way to finer-toothed or tined styling tools.

I am enrolling in a swimming course at college. How can I protect my hair from the chlorine in the water?

The only real way to do this is to use a swimming cap. Apply a thin strip of Vaseline to seal round the edges of the cap to avoid any water penetrating to the hair beneath. If you really do not want to wear a cap, then you need to shampoo and rinse all the chlorine out of your hair as soon as possible after swimming.

Is it better to blow dry my hair or air dry it?

Well, from a hair health point of view, air drying the hair is less harsh on the hair and results in smoother, healthier looking hair. However, if done correctly, and by that I mean not using a hair dryer set too high or too hot, the hair can be blown dry quite safely.

I am an Afro American and am having problems finding a good hair brush to suit my hair

If you are an African American, or if you have extra curly hair, avoid brushing your hair. Use a wide toothed comb, or your fingers to work with your hair. Brushes can destroy African American or extra curly hair by shearing it out of the scalp.

My old shampoo contains a chemical called sodium laurel sulphate, was this damaging my hair?

Yes, most definitely. Avoid shampoos that contain sodium laurel sulphate, or sodium laureth sulphate. These chemicals are synthetic detergents that are used in dishwashing liquid and other cleansers. They are used in shampoos because they lather well, but they are very harsh, and can dry out your hair. Instead, refer to your eBook on how to make your own natural hair shampoo and conditioner mixture.

Do men lose their hair more than women do?

Maybe this was the case in the past but not so much these days. Modern lifestyles add extra pressure and stress in all of our daily lives, men and women. We all share the same degree of fast food diets and lack of exercise too, and for that reason, it is now thought that almost the same amount of women as men suffer from hair loss problems.

Why do cancer patients lose their hair?

People who suffer with cancer usually undergo chemotherapy. Hair loss occurs because chemotherapy targets all rapidly dividing cells—healthy cells as well as cancer cells. Hair follicles are some of the fastest-growing cells in the body, and normally, if you’re not in cancer treatment, your hair follicles divide every 23 to 72 hours. But as the chemo does its work against cancer cells, it also destroys hair cells, and within a few weeks of starting chemo, you may lose some or all of your hair.

Does radiation treatment cause hair Loss like chemotherapy does?

People tend to mix these two treatments together but chemotherapy is different to radiation. Radiation is very site-specific so that the symptoms and side effects are related to where you aim the beam. If someone is having their head treated by radiation, they will lose their hair. However, if they are having their breast radiated, the hair on their head will not fall out. They may lose a little bit of the hair underneath the arm, however, but that’s it.

Is there a herbal cure for Stress?

There are many different herbal remedies widely available today and some of them are used in the treatment of stress. Many of these herbal remedies have been in existence for many thousands of years and were used by the ancient Chinese, Greek and Egyptian civilisations. I personally like the Ayurvedic herbs and treatments, but there are many other different herbal remedies such as Aloe Vera, Evening Primrose, Goldenseal, Green Tea and Ginseng. Each of these herbal remedies can be used for the treatment of stress and also for the treatment of some of the physical symptoms caused by stress such as Eczema, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, fatigue and many other ailments associated with stress. These remedies are normally taken in the form of a tea or drink and in tablet form, as you prefer.

I suffer with high levels of stress. If I start to exercise each day will that really help?

Yes, exercise is one of the key ways to reduce your stress levels. Can I do Yoga even though I suffer with back problems?

Generally speaking, yes, certainly. Yoga consists of a combination of physical exercises, breathing exercises, and meditation, and has been used for thousands of years to promote health and prevent disease, including back pain. You will probably find that your back pain will be relieved and that in time, you get more flexibility too. But, as always, if you are in doubt go and see your doctor first.

Is Yoga better than Pilates to help with your hair condition?

Dr Marie; The differences between Yoga and Pilates are quite simple; Yoga’s approach is holistic, emphasizing balance in all areas — equally strengthening all muscle groups, creating mental and physical balance, encouraging moderation in everything. Whereas Pilates mainly works on the core muscles in your trunk and building up strength. The choice between Yoga and Pilates depends on what you are looking for. If you want an exercise that improves flexibility and muscle tone then Pilates is probably your better choice. If you want to concentrate a bit more on flexibility stress reduction, increased blood flow and body equilibrium, which is exactly what we are looking to do in our hair rejuvenation program, then you should try Yoga.

Is Yoga safe if you have never tried it before?

Experts consider yoga to be very safe for people of all ages and all levels of fitness. But like any physical activity, yoga can cause muscle strains or sprains, so gentle stretching before a yoga session can help prevent injuries. Always tell your doctor before undergoing any new form of diet or exercise if you have medical conditions or are concerned in any way.

I am not keen on walking, and have never tried Yoga, so is swimming good enough exercise if I do it each week?

Any form of aerobic exercise is better than doing no exercise at all. By aerobic, I mean, where the body uses oxygen to produce the energy needed for the activity. Aerobic exercises can condition your heart and lungs if performed at the proper intensity for at least 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week. My personal opinion is that you should try to vary your forms of exercise though, so if you don’t like walking why not simply park your car a little further away from the shops or work and just walk that little bit extra each day, or go for a walk during your lunch break? If you do go swimming, be very careful to rinse out all the harmful chlorine from your hair straight afterwards?

Why is Yoga so good for hair loss?

Yoga postures can help you overcome stress, anxiety, bad indigestion and poor blood circulation to the head and scalp, which are considered as main causes of hair loss. The Headstand yoga pose can be very helpful as it increases blood circulation to the head as well as relieving stress and tension.

What is the role of silica in hair growth and what are its sources? How much should I take everyday

Silica, which is short for silicon dioxide, is a mineral that can help hair growth. It is already found in the body, but more silica can be obtained through certain foods as well as in other forms to enhance hair quality. Silica helps strengthen hair and makes it less likely for hair to become brittle and develop split ends. Silica helps retain moisture in hair, creating shinier strands. It helps also strengthen hair and prevents or reduces hair loss. It may take up to two or three months after the start of supplements for any visible effects to become apparent. After that, hair growth can be maintained through regular ingestion of silica. Silica can naturally be found in raw oats, wheat, whole grains, rice, alfalfa, barley, onions, millet, beetroot and leafy green vegetables.

I do not understand why we need to clean the scalp for a whole month?

The purpose of cleaning the scalp is very important. As we have said in the site we need to make sure the scalp and hair follicles are thoroughly clean. If they are not, then it will restrict the growth of any new hair and make all existing hair weak and thin.

What makes young women go bald?

Young women suffer with hair thinning and baldness, as do older women too. The reasons why younger people go bald maybe because of a number of reasons such as bad lifestyle habits; poor diets; mistreating their hair with over use of shampoos and conditioners; using harmful hair products such as hair dryers and hair strengtheners; their system being out of balance; and of course by hereditary hair disorders.

What is scalp massage? Does it cure baldness?

No one thing by itself will cure baldness. There is no specific overnight cure that has been invented yet and I don’t suppose there ever will be either but scalp massage does help with reducing hair fall and encouraging new growth in a very positive way. This is because having a scalp massage encourages increased blood flow to the hair follicle, and as we know the stronger the blood flow, the more it is able to deliver oxygen and all those nutrients that strong healthy hair needs to make it grow. Another good thing about a scalp massage is that it helps relax the mind and relieves stress. So anything that can help with too much stress is very good and positive for us. Stress can play a big part in the causes of hair loss.

Does a vegetarian diet make your hair condition worse?

In terms of your vegetarian diet, you might very well be taking in insufficient levels of vitamin B-12. This is common among vegetarians, and the results of a deficiency of this include dandruff, scaling, and hair loss. Mostly the B-12 vitamin is taken from meats and animal products, and so not eating any meat may cause deficiencies.

Do white people lose their hair more than Asians or Coloured people?

I have never seen any statistics to prove this, but in reality it could be true. This is because of diet. A western diet and a stressful lifestyle have been proved to be bad for hair health and your general well-being. If Asian women or coloured women are living in a healthier environment, are eating better, more balanced diets, and are leading a happier more carefree type of life then it is bound to be healthier than the Western way of life. Recent surveys in Japan have shown that the increased western influence they now have, on their diet and pace of life has greatly increased cases of hair loss in Japanese people.

Is hair loss hereditary?

Generally speaking, hair loss is hereditary, and more likely to be passed down from your Mother’s side of the family rather than your Father’s side. Technically, hereditary hair loss is caused by DHT interacting with hair follicles, making them weak and vulnerable. But, hair loss can be beaten very successfully and the sooner you start the better chance you have of regaining lost hair.

Why does hair turn grey?

The hair follicle contains a number of pigment cells called Melanin, the same thing that makes our skin’s colour fair or darker. It also helps determine whether a person will burn or tan in the sun. The dark or light colour of someone’s hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains. As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent colour — like gray, silver, or white — as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray.

My wife and I are in our mid 50’s and both have thin hair. Does that mean our children will also have thinning hair?

As we have seen, most cases of hair loss are definitely due to hereditary factors, amongst other reasons. But if your children were to start losing hair then proper treatment would soon rectify the problem for them.

How does Propecia work and is it permanent?

Proprecia works by blocking and reducing DHT in your scalp but it is not a permanent cure. It is only for men, not women, and seems to work on younger men who have only just started losing hair rather than older men suffering with complete baldness. It is not a permanent cure, is very expensive at up to $75 each month, and your condition will reverse to what it was as soon as you stop taking it.

Can acupuncture help with bad hair?

Yes it can. Chinese traditional acupuncture has been used very effectively to halt hair loss and even to help regain hair, but hair growth starts on the inside, and acupuncture is usually administered with a course of herbs as well.

I eat red meat daily. Is this harmful to my hair treatment course?

Eating red meat every day is probably too much. Red meat is full of essential proteins that are required in healthy hair growth but you can get protein from all kinds of sources, beef, chicken, fish, whey, brewer’s yeast, seeds, nuts…. You don’t have to get it from meat, but red meat contains helpful things such as zinc and iron, so by all means eat it, but not every day, rotate it with other foods and there should never be any problem!

I am a lady in my early 30’s and have noticed quite a large amount of hair fall in the shower and on my pillow in the mornings. What is a normal amount of hair fall for someone of my age?

The acceptable amount of hair fall is somewhere in the region of between 100 to 150 hairs a day, for anyone, man or woman, of any age, anything more than that on a permanent basis, means you have a problem which needs to be corrected.

Can I use Olive Oil and Jojoba Oil daily to clean my scalp every night?

There will be no need to use it every night after the first 4 weeks because already the scalp will be really clean and healthy. But you could continue if you want to. In all keep monitoring the health of your scalp and hair, and be prepared to stop if necessary.

I find a lot of hair falling when I massage my scalp with the cleaning solution of the 2 oils. Should I stop massaging and cleansing my scalp now?

No please do not stop massaging the solution into your scalp. You need to do this for the first 4 weeks without fail. It is quite normal to have an increased amount of hair fall because the scalp is being treated like it never has before, and any weak hair will fall quite easily. Once your treatment is in full operation, all your hair will return, but in a stronger, healthier condition.

After 1 month of doing the preparation and cleaning treatment, I think my hair feels better but looks thinner. Is this right?

Yes, this is quite normal. As I explained in the previous question, not only are you encouraging a stronger blood flow to your scalp, you are also opening up your pores and letting them breathe. Any weak hair will fall out at this time because of the pressure of the massage and because of opening up of the pores and follicles.

I finished my first month of cleansing and I am concerned because my hair looks thinner than when I started. Will I continue to keep losing hair?

No, not at all. This is nothing to worry too much about. What has happened is that your weaker hair has fallen during your cleansing treatments, leaving just the healthy, stronger hair. Later on, as your scalp and body system improves all that weak hair will gradually be replaced with strong, new hair growth.

I want to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but how big is a single portion?

The best way to gauge an accurate portion for yourself, is to take it that whatever you can hold in your open hand is a portion suitable for your requirements. A portion varies on the size and age of a person; after all you would not expect a young child to have the same size portion as an adult, would you?

I have stains on the pillow from the oil mixture that I use to clean my scalp overnight. Can I wrap a towel round my head at nights?

It is far better to leave the hair uncovered overnight to allow air to circulate and the pores to open up and breathe properly. So, if you are having problems with any excess oil staining your pillows why not put an old towel over the pillow? But be sure to change the towel regularly and keep it clean at all times.

Why is drinking water so good for hair condition?

You should always drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses a day on average. Water not only hydrates your skin and body, and helps flush out all the wastes and toxins, it also hydrates your hair.

I drink around 6 – 7 cups of tea a day, is that just the same as drinking water, because tea consists mainly of water, right?

There are conflicting medical opinions on this, but in my opinion it’s not the same at all. Tea is not pure water, it’s a whole mixture of water and herbs, and although tea contains important antioxidants that help fight against cell damage, it also contains caffeine. In other words, you then still need to drink pure water to flush out the tea.

I find it hard to exercise each day because of pressure of work, so can I have longer exercise periods at weekends to compensate?

No, it is not going to be beneficial to you if you cram all your exercising into just two days. First of all you need regular exercise on a daily level, and secondly if you were to try to exercise in just your weekend times, the danger is that you could easily overdue things and cause physical strain to yourself.

Olive oil is so good for hair because of its properties. The monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidant properties make it an excellent conditioner for dry and damaged hair. Can I use ordinary, cheaper olive oil or do I really need to buy the more expensive Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

When using olive oil for your hair, make sure it is extra virgin oil. If the olive oil is not extra virgin, it means that it has undergone some form of fermentation or chemical processing, which takes away the quality and pureness of the oil.

I always use a skin moisturiser, but is Olive oil good for my skin as well as my hair?

Olive oil is high in antioxidants, that protect against age-accelerating free radicals. Olive oil can be taken internally as well as used externally, and as we know we also need to nourish the body and skin from the inside, not just externally.
